Formerly part of the British Empire Antigua is English speaking and is now an independent country and a member of the British Commonwealth.
It has a modern International airport with numerous direct flights from the UK and USA. Generally regarded as the yachting capital of the Caribbean, many of the worlds finest yachts can be seen in the adjacent anchorages of English Harbour and Falmouth Harbour.
Antigua is renowned for its many white sand beaches and certainly the Freemans Bay beach just seconds from the house is a good one, as is Pigeon Beach nearby in Falmouth Harbour. The crescent shaped beach at Half Moon Bay has been rated as one of the world’s best
At its widest points the island is about 12 miles long by 8 miles wide.
There are plentiful taxis operating in and around the English and Falmouth area that can be called using the VHF radio in the house or phone. There are several rental car operators in the Falmouth Harbour area and at the airport. By road the capital St Johns, with its numerous shops, and the airport are both about 30 minutes by car.
Currency and facilities
The local currency is Eastern Caribbean dollar EC$, US$ are also acceptable, as are credit cards. There is a bank and 2 small supermarkets in English/Falmouth harbour with a large fully stocked supermarket in St Johns and another at Jolly Harbour. There is a visitor friendly medical facility in Falmouth Harbour.
There are numerous excellent restaurants nearby within the English and Falmouth Harbour area to suit most tastes and budgets. A list with contact details and comments and other information can be seen in the guest information folder at the house on arrival.
Activities available on the island include scuba diving, yacht and boat rental, sport fishing, rain forest zip wire, golf with 2 publicly accessible 18-hole courses and helicopter tours of the island or the volcano on the adjacent island of Montserrat.
